Thank you for your post on your fachwerk barn.

I am an photographer currently working on a photo project documenting fachwerk barns and houses in Wisconsin. If possible, I would like to come out and photograph your barn sometime.
If that is ok with you, please email me your contact information (daniel.seurer@oracle.com), or call me on my cell phone. I live in the Lake Mills Wisconsin area.

Thank you.

I really have a problem with this. Nothing destroys our land more than development and then we have to pay for it over and over. We have to pay for it with our tax dollars and we have to pay for it with increased insurance premiums.

Communities shouldn't have the choice of opting out of the federal flood program. All communities should have to participate and have to abide by federal guidelines for building. If an individual chooses not to pay for insurance, that's their choice. But then they can pay for damages themselves.

Americans need to start taking more responsibility for themselves. We're not children, you know.

Hi Neighbors!

I'm sorry you had a crappy weekend. I followed a link from the Garden Web plumbing forum to your site.

I just wanted to let you know that the only time my septic ever failed was when we had a party up at our cabin in Balsam Lake, Wisconsin. Yes, it is embarrassing! One of the things that 'saved' us is that we are next to a public access that has a porty potty nearby. But embarrassing to think that all our city friends may think it's a common occurance.

We also have septic at home in Lino Lakes, MN. We have lived there for 15 years and that was our first septic. From the get-go I knew not to rely on the garbage disposal like I did when we lived in the city. I rarely use it except after scraping dishes into the wastebasket (or compost in summer) and then rinsing on the disposal side. Veggies are peeled into the sink and then scooped out and brought to compost or trash.

This summer I am going to host a large wedding shower for mostly city dwellers. I plan on making a pretty sign and putting it in a frame on the bathroom vanity which would say something like "We are on a septic system. Please don't put anything down the toilet except what you ate or drank and T.P.

I seriously think that some people DON'T GET IT!

I am usually on the kitchen forum at GW and a few people mentioned that they knew of people who used their toilets as Garbage Disposals because they didn't have a disposal. But they insisted that they didn't flush bones, as if that's any consulation!

My best to you and your family! And hugs to your DH who got the dirty job done over Easter Weekend, bless his heart.

Like john says a septic tank should be pumped on a regular schedule. I owned a house for 20 years with a septic tank that was original to the house. @ people in the house the tank was pumped every 2 years. In the summer I would go out and dig up the lid and call the pump guy. We babied the tank. no harsh cleaning products just the normal stuff that goes down the toilet. The septic system functioned without any problems for 60 years until we sold the house and were told to replace it because it no longer met code. Nothing wrong with it, just too old. The system was replaced with an aereation system. The output was funneled to the county field drain system. If we didn't move I probably would have had it replaced anyhow. The State of Ohio enacted new septic tank regulations that would have cost 10-15K to replace the tank now. The regulations require a mound system for the leach field and pump station put in to put the leachate from the tank to the leach field. Everyone was replacing old systems before the new rules went into effect. They did that so they were in age compliance in case they sold the house. The house then has a modern septic system when they go to sell.
