No, the mushroom factor isn’t some manner of psychedelic tripping. Nor is it the layers of fat hanging over my jeans, although it very well could be.

Nope.

The mushroom factor is the phenomenon that one small home renovation project will inevitably lead to many, many large projects. I first read of this mushroom factor years ago while memorizing Old House Journal magazines. My husband and I had just purchased a 1917 American Foursquare and I dreamed of the lovely renovations we would do.

Now, twenty plus years later, the mushroom factor is definitely part of our lives. It’s a given, if we decide to paint a room, it will lead to tearing out the plaster and lathing, insulating the walls, drywalling and sanding the hardwood floor.

We’ve accomplished a lot in twenty years. And we’ve learned a lot. But when it comes to caring for the spaces we inhabit, one can never know enough. Thus the blog.

Our home projects always mushroom into so much more. This blog likely will do the same. Home renovation, old houses, interior design—the topics are endless. Check back often and let us mushroom together.
